Ursula Brookbank
CYRK
(2014, video, 4.35 minutes)
From, CYRK: A Woman’s Own Story of Life Under the Big Top, a performance – installation presented by Automata, Chinatown Los Angeles.
Crystallography & The She World Archive
(2014, 16mm with crystal, 3 minutes)
The principals of X-ray Crystallography used by biochemist Dorothy Hodgkin to study molecular structures applied to film projection. A short five minute lecture introduces this film experiment.

Pablo Marín
Angelus novus
(2014, Super 8, b&w, silent, 2 minutes)
“This storm is what we call progress.” –Walter Benjamin.

Resistfilm
(2014, Super 8 to16mm, b&w, silent, 14 min.)
In-camera investigations of (filmic) nature. Rustic homages to early avant-garde landmarks and wild landscapes of the 21st Century.

Nora Sweeney
Sweet Oranges
(16mm, 18 minutes 21 seconds)
Heading west from my house, I explore the back roads off of California State Route 126, finding small, historic towns, farms, and railway tracks nestled between mountains and orchards—a landscape that evokes a dream of California’s past.  Along the way, I meet Jaime, Blanca, and Hugo, a group of orange pickers from Michoacan, Mexico, who share with me their songs, dreams, aspirations, and thoughts about work.

Prologue: Five of the Most Beautiful Moments in Film History
(2010, 16mm, color, silent 24fps, 45sec.)
Originally made for what was intended to be a much longer, multi-part film about corrupted image integrity, or something like that. Never made the rest of the movie, so now this little thing is a movie of its own, I guess.

Scene From a Movie
(2014, 16mm, color, sound, 2.25min.)
Compromised sentiments ricochet around a compromised landscape in a sort of found/unrequested cosmic feedback. A permanent work in progress.

Squelching the Kitten
(2014, HD video, color, sound, 3.25min.)
Animals should never be held accountable. The irrelevance of doing so is here demonstrated by the tactful deployment of a chapter’s worth of insults from a 1968 party book against a cat who we have to assume REALLY had it coming.

Levitated Mass Dailies/Freaked Out
(2014, 16mm, color, sound, 5.5min.)
Never to be repeated. Dailies from a new work-in-progress with a live performance soundtrack that may or may not be making a comparison between Heizer’s rock and sexually transmitted disease.

The Song Remains The Same
(2014, 16mm, color, sound, 4.5min.)
When feelings are reduced to keywords, it’s a lot easier to find just the right soundtrack.  And when an emotional response can be so readily activated via musical triggers, it’s a lot easier to make a moving film.

This program is supported in part by grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts & the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
