New Works Salon XLIV

The New Works Salons series is a casual forum for the presentation and discussion of new works in film, video, sound, and performance, with local and visiting artists often in-person to introduce their work. This, the forty-fourth program in the series, will feature new works by Marquita Flowers, Zane Gutierrez, Kate Lain, Mathew Lax, and Miko Revereza. Zane Gutierrez will show his video Today I woke up sad. A part of his recent thesis show at Calarts, the work is a diary film about a moment of struggle dealing with mental health, focusing on a the bed—a place of comfort and sensuality—that is also a conflicted space, becoming a trap. Kate Lain will show two works, her Super 8 film Fifty Feet Near Wendover (For Nancy Holt), an interplay of landscape, concrete, and light; a sculptural homage to Nancy Holt edited in camera on a single roll of Super 8 film at Holt’s Sun Tunnels in the Great Basin Desert. She will also show her video Friskies Paté (for Joyce Wieland): “Fifty years after Wieland made her film Catfood, I re-performed the creation of the film, working in a different era, that of YouTube cat videos and a near-constant flood of remake/reboot movies motivated by dollar signs. And yet it is still a 13.5-minute movie of a cat eating, a movie that denies the domestic and re-frames the everyday, a movie that trades in expected labor for chosen labor.” Matthew Lax will show his video AMERICAN FOLK: “a found footage film with no found footage. A study in aphorisms: The Sad Tropics, Elian Gonzalez, un-attributed master paintings and mis-attributed artifacts alongside the history of denim. Grappling with the construction and collapse of culture through specific objects and narrativized histories; signs, myths and legacy are questioned and revised.” Miko Revereza will show a new 16mm film And Beyond More Walls, which takes its title from a short story by Filipino-American writer Bienvenido Santos. It is a film about the manifestation of geopolitical borders in the mundane and intimate spaces of domestic life. How does the psychology of undocumented life affect relationships? How does potential captivity render one’s reality? And Beyond More Walls, is a personal study of internalized borders through the lens of an undocumented filmmaker navigating a maze of entrapment. Through a series of visualized fences and fragmented voiceovers, Miko Revereza shares a view of walls within walls.
