The New Works Salon series is a casual forum for the presentation and discussion of new works in film, video, sound, and performance, with local and visiting artists often in-person to introduce their work. This program includes Nes Abegaze, Tuni Chatterji, Lyra Hill, Eve LaFountain, a collaboration between Jodie Mack & Lisa Marr, and Julie Sadowski.
This program will feature two works by Lyra Hill—her anaglyphic 3D 16mm film Breathe with Cube and Happy Ending, a performance for three 35mm slide projectors and custom shutter device.
Jodie Mack & Lisa Marr will show their collaborative Super 8 double projection work 50 Flowers, a cross-country collaboration on one winter’s day inspired by the young unsung artists of Atelier Martine.
Tuni Chatterji will present Listen to the River, a meditative sound experience made of collected and reconstructed ambient soundscapes that encourage listeners to reflect on the past, present and future of the L.A river. It can be listened to on headphones or collectively through speakers. Listen to the River is made to to be experienced in conjunction with a sculptural project called Nature in Bags. These are bags filled with small collections of objects gathered during my walks on the river and evoke some kind of thematic, conversational or aesthetic thought. Listeners will be invited to choose a bag to hold and contemplate while listening to the sound piece.
Julie Sadowski will address the public with a new audio piece.
Eve LaFountain will show her work Allons à France! A trip to France captured on super 8 film in true home movie style. This dream journey goes from the bridges of the Seine, the Canal Saint-Martin, the Moulin Rouge and the Eiffel Tower, on a train south to Marseilles, a boat ride through the calanques in Cassis, and finally a romantic wedding in a vineyard. Très magnifique!
We’ll also have two of Nes Abegaze‘s brand new films celebrating family, memory, and the will to keep ancestral knowledge alive. Footage for the films was shot in Gondar, Ethiopia and Los Angeles and hand processed at EPFC during Nesanet’s January/February LA AIR.
